Celebrate Miami Spice with Takeout in Miami Beach

In previous years, Miami Spice has remained a tradition where numerous restaurants provide three-course lunch and dinner menus for $25 and $39, respectively. Given the existing circumstances, a lot of places aren’t offering the traditional indoor dining experience synonymous with the event. However, many of them are still recognizing Miami Spice by offering special takeout menu options.

One example of this is Ocean Drive’s Azabu Miami Beach. Its four-course menu has choices like braised black cod, wagyu gyoza plus other Miami Spice options. Customers may take delivery of their meals through services like GrubHub, UberEats, or Postmates.

Tanuki is celebrating Miami Spice to the northwest on Alton Road with offerings that look a lot like a Bento Box such as grilled salmon, sashimi, miso soup, and more. Customers can order free delivery via the restaurant website when using the promotion code FIRST which will knock off a cool 10 percent from their initial order.

The Asian-skewed Drunken Dragon is a short distance north of Tanuki and is also partaking in the Miami Spice festivities. Its special menu features crispy bok choy, miso salmon, and desserts such as the Amsterdam, a brownie with vanilla ice cream, and hot chocolate foam. The dinner menu is available Sunday to Thursday.

Two Miami Beach Restaurants Rank High

If you consider yourself something of a food connoisseur who likes to enjoy the best dining experiences the country has to offer, you may be surprised to learn that a pair of the best eateries in the country are located right here in Miami Beach. The popular travel website TripAdvisor recently released its annual Best Restaurants in the U.S. for 2020 list and two places in the barrier island earned impressive spots.

In the category of Everyday Dining, Pane & Vino and the 11 ^th Street Diner earned first and second place, respectively. The former is known for its excellent homemade pasta while the latter is acclaimed for its burgers and pancaked. Notably, Pane & Vino managed to hold its number one ranking for the second year in a row.

While the ranking sounds like great news, there is some not so good news to report. If you were hoping to have a meal from one of these two places, you’re going to have to wait. Both Pane & Vino as well as 11^th Street Diner have closed their doors temporarily due to the pandemic.

If you prefer fine dining, you may also wish to add The Bazaar by Jose Andrés to the list, which made the top twenty in its category.

Work on Canopy Park Begins

Construction has finally kicked off after a long wait on a Miami Beach project located at the empty spot that once was the South Shore Hospital. The much-discussed and planned Canopy Park is a vast project that will feature a park covering three lush acres located at the 600 and 700 blocks plus plenty of green spaces, paths for walking and bicycling, a place for dogs to run, a gym outdoors, public art exhibits, a tree canopy and a children’s playground designed by MONSTRUM, a Danish architecture company.

As far as the park is concerned, it is one of the key public benefits offered in return for approval to build a soaring residential tower on the southern end of the large property.

Canopy Park will also boast many features focused on durability and sustainability, in addition to the various sights that are in store for future visitors. These include habitat restoration comprised of over 200 trees and in excess of 100 palms, lots of native plant communities, and even a water management system designed to be environmentally friendly.

Although summer 2020 is quite different due to the circumstances most people already know about, there are still lots of Miami’s favorite dishes promptly available to eat at home or in a socially distant setting, including key lime pie, the ideal dessert in South Florida. Should you be in need of a good key lime pie to cure the summer quarantine blues or stave off the heat, a couple of places in Miami Beach have them available for delivery or takeout.

On Purdy Avenue is where you’ll find Icebox Cafe, which serves its own take on the popular dessert dubbed the “Deep Dish Key Lime Pie”. The crust has a nice crunchiness to it and, just as you would expect based on the eatery’s name, the pie is served chilled so you can cool off from the South Florida heat.

CAO Bakery & Cafe on Alton Road was started by the grandson of the man behind the founding of South Florida’s classic Vicky Bakery. CAO is focused on adding a distinct spin to its offerings, which is why it now offers key lime pies alongside longtime classics like guava pastries. If you order an item during the month of July, you’ll receive a complimentary slice.

Independence Day Weekend Events in South Florida

In the past, Independence Day has seen scores of people head to Miami Beach and beyond to enjoy the fireworks and some fun. This year, most of the gatherings have been closed although some cities will be doing displays, albeit with measures in place such as preventing access to the public entirely (i.e.: Fort Lauderdale).

The Confidante Hotel in South Beach is celebrating Independence Day all weekend long. The festivities begin on Friday with all-day barbecues plus movies by the poolside during the evening, live music, outdoor games (including a frequently sanitized giant Jenga), and more.

If you’ll be doing Biscayne Bay boating this weekend, you may want to look out for Keyla Castillo’s RawBar2Go. She can often be spotted near sandbars serving her personally made ceviche to other boaters, and she’ll be doing just that this weekend from noon to 8 pm.

Sales of alcohol will no longer be allowed at any retail locations after 8 pm and most people will need to be indoors from 12:30 am to 5 am.

Try Some Vegetarian-Friendly Indian Food in Miami Beach

Are you looking for Indian food in Miami Beach? If so, you’ll be pleased to know that Diya Indian Kitchen in the neighborhood of Sunset Harbour has opened its doors once again. The restaurant originally opened shortly before restaurants across Miami-Dade County were forced to close.

Diya Indian Kitchen’s cuisine is the work of executive chef and epidemiologist Vidya whose mother Diya Maharaj is the inspiration behind the restaurant. Many of the recipes have been passed down for generations and the food is vegetarian-friendly as well as packed with healthy ingredients designed to boost the immune system.

For those curious to try Diya Indian Kitchen’s menu, some of the food options include malai kofta, mushroom matar masala and butter paneer, and an Eggplant Nirvana Burger which you may have spotted at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. The restaurant’s signature dish, however, is the rice pancake known as the Dosa which takes as long as fifteen hours to make and uses fermented batter. Guests have the option of several different variations including pizza, cheese and palak paneer, and masala. Desserts are also available.

Diya Indian Kitchen is located at 1766 Bay Road and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 4 pm to 9 pm.

The Miami Beach Monorail Connection

For years, officials in Miami have brainstormed ways to connect the city to the barrier island of Miami Beach beyond the MacArthur Causeway and the Julia Tuttle. The consensus seems to be to connect the two cities along the MacArthur’s southern side, and ideas have included a pod car, magnetic levitation train, and more.

The two cities are now collaborating on an idea that may see a monorail become the connection. The plan would involve an elevated track running just over three miles long, with a pair of trains capable of accommodating up to 300 passengers operating at all times. These trains would reach speeds of about fifty miles per hour, which means they would be able to complete about twelve trips each hour. Although the monorail proposal does not mention fares, it would likely cost around $5 a trip. The project could result in the creation of more than 2,500 jobs.

Over in Miami Beach, the monorail would make its stop at Fifth Street and there are plans for another possible stop on the beach. In Miami, the MetroMover would transport passengers to MiamiCentral where they can then hop a train to the airport.

Amazon Sets Its Sights on Miami Beach

When shopping online, many of us like to go straight to Amazon. The technology company and retail behemoth is one of the world’s most valuable brands and today, it’s also the largest online marketplace in the world.

Amazon has expanded its reach significantly since its inception. For example, its Alexa-powered Echo devices, the Kindle reader, and the Fire tablets and televisions are all sold in stores and maintain strong popularity. However, in terms of third party products, most buyers still have to visit the website or use the app to browse through Amazon’s gargantuan inventory of products.

This will soon change, however.

Miami Beach is one of just three cities in the entire state of Florida that will receive a new Amazon store. This “four star” store will be found on Lincoln Road. As its description alludes to, all of the products sold in the store will have a minimum rating of four stars and they will also consist of “new and trending” products as well as top sellers. Product categories will include toys, electronics, appliances, books, and more.

Details as to when the Miami Beach Amazon store will open are currently unknown. The other two Florida cities receiving Amazon stores are Palm Beach Gardens and Orlando.

Hotels Bookings for Tourists Return

While Miami Beach has decided to keep beaches closed for the time being, some other developments are happening. For example, community pool closure orders are being lifted and booking restrictions on hotels are also ending, meaning tourists will once again be able to book South Beach hotels. Previously, hotel bookings were relegated to essential workers.

As Miami hotels plan to reopen in the face of conflicting coronavirus and emergency laws, they must do so with the recently implemented curfew beginning at 8 p.m. The curfew for the entire county of Miami-Dade begins at 9 p.m.

While beaches remain closed, several restaurants are open and many are offering dining outdoors. Nikki Beach is one example. Tables are being limited to four people or six if each person is a member of the household. Tables have been spread apart, valet is gone, and masks are required to be seated.

About half of the various Lincoln Road businesses are up and running while several others are also expected to reopen this month. While the street has been pedestrian-friendly for numerous years, you’re going to see some significant changes as tables are now further away from each other.

Miami Beach’s Plan to Return to Normalcy

Miami Beach recently completed its comprehensive plan addressing how to strategically re-open the city, which is scheduled to start Wednesday as it is executed in multiple, carefully developed phases.

Phase one of Miami Beach’s re-opening is aimed at the numerous retail stores and allowing them to resume business, as well as the museums and other businesses throughout the barrier island like barbershops and salons. The second phase of the reopening would start on the 27th and will also require reopening of the sidewalk cafes and Miami Beach’s many varied restaurants.

However, even as Miami Beach moves to return things to some sense of normalcy, all businesses would be expected to obey the guidelines defined for social distancing. This means that all businesses are allowed to operate at a capacity of only fifty percent, and customers and workers are also expected to maintain a minimum distance of six feet.

Miami Beach residents, as well as anyone planning on visiting the barrier island in the coming days, should be aware that for the time being, the beaches will remain closed along with other businesses like bars, gyms, spas, and movie theaters.
